THE PROJECT

“JGrrey's journey has been one of reinvention. Initially recognised for her viral performance of ‘Don’t Fade’ on Colors in 2017, she amassed millions of streams with tracks like For Keeps and Growing and toured with Billie Eilish in Europe. The enforced pause of the pandemic prompted a deep introspection, leading to personal revelations and newfound confidence. Collaborating with producer Owen Cutts and friend Kojey Radical, JGrrey's music has evolved, blending old influences with new sounds.”

Continuing on from Theirs13 and May ft. Kojey Radical, Jen and I began work on the final single from the ‘If Not Now?’ Mixtape; Drream ft. Zombie Juice. Jen had been looking at a lot of natural forms, particularly cell cultures and found this very visually intriguing. So I began experimenting with cell shapes and structures. After looking at images of bone structures under the microscope I thought it could be interesting to experiment with these shapes. What would a deconstructed portrait look like? The mixtape was all about identity, with Jen being adopted it was interesting looking at DNA and cells. Was this her identity? Is she her DNA? I wanted to find a balance of intriguing visual and seductiveness without straying too far into the horror and ‘The Thing’ like territory. I developed dreamlike deconstructed portraits.

I looked to cellular structures for inspiration. My initial sketch put facial features into this space, forming natural shapes with a unnatural feel to them. They sat in an unknown space with dark voids between. To create these structures I began hand modelling and sculpting the forms from polymer based sculptors clay. As the forms developed I brought them together, melting them into a continuous flowing shape. The result was very striking. I took pictures of these sculptures and then illustrated over the top of them to add a slimy and sickly glowing essence to them. Below is some documentation and sketches of this process.
